The Oscars Continue to Offer Zero Diversity

With the 88th Academy Awards ceremony quickly approaching, it is important to once again draw attention to the lack of diversity in the nominations. Last year in an article published on The Telegraph’s website, several graphs were created to give a visual representation of 2015’s Oscar nominations. There was a striking difference in the number of men nominated compared to the number of females nominated in all categories, aside from the obvious gendered awards “Best Actress in a Leading Role” and “Best Actress in a Supporting Role.”

A second chart published by The Telegraph in 2015 really helps to simplify these statistics and they are nothing short of shocking. Or really, are they? It should come as no surprise that women are often overlooked for these awards. Likewise, they are also undervalued in Hollywood and are not given the same job opportunities as their male counterparts.

As women are often discriminated against in the Academy Awards, people of color (POC) are as well. I plan to touch on this more in a few weeks, but for now I will include another graph. Let us not forget that right now in 2016, there are absolutely no nonwhite actors or actresses nominated for the second time in a row. It should go without saying that something needs to change, because this is absolutely appalling.
